Discovery Electricity
Snakes, Butterbeans, and the Discovery of Electricity by James Ashbrook Perkins, Snakes, Butterbeans, & the Discovery of Electricity
Michael Faraday: Physics and Faith by Colin Archibald Russell, Oxford Portraits in Science is an ongoing series of scientific biographies for young adults. Each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as his or her discoveries, combining accessible technical information with numerous photographs, illustrations, and diagrams. The work of Michael Faraday (1791-1867) changed the face of modern science and his discoveries almost immediately saw wide use in everyday life. Faraday conducted chemical experiments with chlorides (used today in dry cleaning), benzene (an organic solvent and fuel), and steel alloys (used widely in construction, transportation, and for the production of many household goods). Beginning in 1821, he concentrated on studying electricity and magnetism, and invented the electric transformer and the dynamo (electric generator). He is also credited with the invention of the electric motor. Colin Russell introduces the basic concepts involved in understanding Faraday's work, and provides a wonderfully informed discussion of the scientist's everyday life.
Terrestrial stationary waves - Terrestrial stationary waves were considered by Nikola Tesla to be his most important discovery. On July 3, 1899, Tesla claimed he had discovered this new geo-electrical phenomenon, which would allow for the transport of electricity around the world. Discovery Kids - Discovery Kids Channel is a digital cable television channel, owned by Discovery Communications (see Discovery Channel) with programming for education of children. Discovery Kids broadcasts a Saturday morning programming lineup for children called Discovery Kids on NBC, which began running in September of 2002. Central Electricity Board - The United Kingdom Central Electricity Board was set up under The Electricity (Supply) Act 1926 to standardise the nation's electricity supply. At that time, the industry consisted of more than 600 electricity supply companies and local authority undertakings, and different areas operated at different voltages and frequencies (including DC in some places). Central Electricity Authority (UK) - The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) was the body that ran the United Kingdom's electricity supply industry between 1954 and 1957. The CEA replaced the British Electricity Authority (BEA) as a result of the Electricity Reorganisation (Scotland) Act 1954.
